BEANO COMIC (THE)

Issue: 21 (1938)
From: 1938 To: 1938

This is the 1st Christmas issue (even though it's a bit early, dated 17th Dec) with free gift Merry Christmas Mask (no examples of this thought to exist); 1st appearance Pansy Potter by Hugh MacNeil (she didn’t appear from issue #1 as has been stated in some books and histories). 1st Frosty McNab and Good King Coke.

It is thought there are less than 10 extant copies of this comic so it is rarer than issue #1 and arguably has a very high collector status as the first Christmas cover.

Phil Comics of Brighton (very expert in the Beano and Dandy let me tell you!), sold a repaired Good Plus copy for £461.89 in their Mar 2014 auction on eBay UK. An amazing price for the grade at the time. Some time back on eBay uk there was sold a stunning Very Fine copy but for some reason I don't have a note of the final sale price which is annoying! Got a picture but no price.

This is an extremely desirable comic!

Beano Christmas covers tend to be more highly valued than Dandy Christmas covers though for my money Dandy omnes can be just as festive and have good little story lines on the font cover (Dandy #108 and #159 for example).

Jun 2015: Comic Book Postal Auctions sold a lovely Very Fine copy for a record-breaking £2,907 (inc 14% Buyer's Premium).
